Guatemala has a very different Cultural Context than the United States. Most cultures of the world are collectivistic cultures which place the highest value on relationships. The United States is an individualistic culture, and while many in the U.S. do value relationships, they are not ultimately the highest priority. This key difference is rooted in how we were raised and interpretation does not come naturally to those of the other type of culture. The difference between individualistic and collectivistic cultures has a fundamental impact on communication and leadership as well as how time and self are conceived.
