One of the things the mentors are finding as they build relationships with families living in the Guatemala City garbage dump is there is a dysfunction in how the family relates to each other. They have found a lot of negativity towards the children, including comparisons such as “why can’t you be more like so and so.” The mentors are creating activities for the families to work together building cooperation and a positive view of each other.
In this activity, the family spent time dreaming and making goals for 2017. They worked together to draw or write them out and then shared with the rest of the group. This helps the families spend positive time together. It gives them the opportunity to get outside of the daily struggle for survival that is their constant situation and allows them to imagine steps they can take this year for their families.
