According to Brian Fikkert and Steve Corbett in When Helping Hurts, one of the biggest challenges of material poverty is that it is physically isolating. Individuals and families close themselves off from each other. They include quotes of people living in material poverty who explain feeling alone and isolated is what it really means or feels to be poor.
Both in Guatemala City and Popabaj, For the Love of Missions has programs which bring people together. In both urban and rural, we hear from the families how much the programs mean to them because they are now connecting and building relationships with each other. One woman in Popabaj said, “we used to just stay in our own houses, but now we laugh and help each other.” This is true poverty alleviation.
