How can helping hurt anyway? We can actually do a lot of damage to ourselves and those we are trying to help. Often people living in material poverty have a low self image- feeling helpless or worthless. And people not living in material poverty have an elevated self-image- they could be the provider or problem solver. But when the non-materially poor give or do for the materially poor, both the low and high self-images are confirmed and this just keeps everyone away from the true image God wants us to have of ourselves. The first step is awareness that we may not understand all the dynamics in a situation. We must always ask God to direct our relationships to be growing toward Him.
